“As part of National Licensing Week, North Somerset Council organised a roadshow and enforcement operation in Weston-super-Mare on Friday 23 June.
After arranging to spend a quiet Saturday evening carrying out a shift behind the bar at the Town House, Llandudno, my colleague from North Wales Police, Aaron Haggis let me know I would be on my own, his excuse, his wife had just had a baby, not the best excuse, but as Savanah Harper was only a few hours old I let him off.
Arriving at 8:30 I was given the obligatory health and safety briefing, a staff shirt and told were the tips jar was, then it was down to the cellar so I could top up the ice, fill all the fridges and most importantly fill the mop bucket.
Here’s a brief update on what Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the leading national personal safety charity, is doing to promote safety in taxi licensing. For many years we have advocated for improving safety standards in taxi licensing and we are calling for national minimum licensing standards for taxis and private hire vehicles to ensure consistency across the UK.
On Wednesday 21st June officers from the Licensing Teams of both Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire Police, as well as the local Compliance Manager from the Gambling Commission, undertook a number of visits to licensed premises in the district in support of the Institute of Licensing’s National Licensing Week. The purpose of the visits was not only to ensure compliance but also to provide advice/guidance to the trade and provide public reassurance by demonstrating the closer partnership working which underpins the good work that is undertaken in the area.

I have seen enormous strides with the Night Time Economy and the issues this used to cause us, we have come from a very high ASB / Fight problem in the Pub Clusters to a far lower level in my three years I have been in post.

The Commission is delighted to be taking part in an event aimed at raising awareness of the importance of licensing and how it helps members of the public.
Now in its second year National Licensing Week highlights the significant role licensing plays in protecting consumers in everyday life – whether that be catching a taxi, buying a beer, purchasing a dog or placing a bet.
As part of this year’s event, which runs between 19 and 23 June, Commission colleagues will be out and about across the country offering support.
